What is an eTA?

An eTA (Electronic Travel Authorization) is an electronic travel document that is required by most visa-exempt travelers who wish to travel to Canada by air. Who needs an eTA?

• Citizens of visa-exempt countries who have been refused entry into Canada in the past
• Citizens of visa-exempt countries who have a criminal record

How to apply for an eTA

You can apply for an eTA online at the Government of Canada's official website. The application process takes about 10 minutes and costs CAD $7. You will need to provide your passport information, travel plans, and contact information. Most eTAs are approved within 72 hours, but it is recommended that you apply at least 7 days before your travel date.
